The account that posted the videos has a version of “GirlsDoPorn” as its username and included the sex trafficking site in the title of the videos. Finally, in March this year, the alleged GirlsDoPorn mastermind, Michael Pratt, was extradited from Spain to the US to face charges linked to the operation. In total, those involved in GirlsDoPorn have been ordered to pay more than $35 million in restitution. LGBTQ+ teens and young adults may be particularly at risk of participating in sexting, with 21% of LGBTQ+ youth reporting they have shared images or videos of themselves. This may be because LGBTQ+ teens report feeling more pressured to sext, or, possibly due to uncomfortability or inability to be “out” and dating in real life, are creating romantic relationships online.

The owner of a pornographic site who federal authorities consider the “mastermind” behind a commercial sex trafficking ring was recently extradited from Spain to appear in court nearly five years after felony charges were filed against him in San Diego. After the victims returned home, still believing that they would remain anonymous, clips of the videos were posted on heavily trafficked adult film sites, like Pornhub, meant to funnel viewers to the full-length versions of the videos on Pratt’s website, GirlsDoPorn. Pratt charged visitors to GirlsDoPorn a subscription fee and generated more than $17 million in revenue. Since then, 22 survivors have been awarded nearly $13 million in damages, and 402 victims were given copyright ownership of videos featuring them, making it easier to scrub them from the web. At the end of 2023, Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo Holdings, agreed to pay damages to women impacted by the sharing of the GirlsDoPorn videos. The individuals behind the scheme, according to the DOJ, told the women the videos would only be sold on DVDs outside of the United States and the footage would not be posted to the internet.

In yet another ripple, Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo — formerly MindGeek — was ordered last year to submit to three years of federal monitoring of its content and screening. Aylo is the parent company for a network of porn sites, including Pornhub, PornhubPremium, Brazzers, YouPorn, Reality Kings, Men.com, TransAngels and Nataku. In October, the federal government charged Pratt and others with criminal sex trafficking. Pratt also faces child-pornography charges after he flew a 16-year-old to Southern California. The man whom multiple young woman alleged coerced them into amateur porn shoots is on the lam from federal law enforcement, and all that running has only made cops want to dress him down even more, so to speak.

After all, these women grew up in the Internet age, where amateur porn has been rampantly available for years. On top of that, many instances of their peers’ sexual exploration through sexting had traveled down several slippery slopes, including cases where teens had been criminally charged for sharing x-rated media they took of themselves. Holm Law Group, which represents more than 80 Girls Do Porn victims, sent two letters to Cloudflare in the last year—one in October 2022, and another last month—demanding that the company drop a list of more than 100 porn websites hosting their content.

These habits will carry into college and independent life when they get older. Much of teens’ social connection is happening on smartphones, which have made it increasingly easier to stay connected at all times. They would fly a woman to San Diego, take her to a hotel room, and pressure her to sign a contract quickly without reading it.
